Considering an Electric Vehicle?

There are two basic types of plug-in electric vehicles:

  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)
A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle is similar to conventional hybrids, but it has a larger battery that can be plugged into an electric outlet. PHEVs are usually designed with an electric-only range of 10 to 40 miles, blended with a gasoline engine to achieve higher speeds and loads. After the electric-only range is exceeded, the vehicle continues to operate as a hybrid vehicle using a gasoline engine or generator.
  • All-Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)
A typical All-Battery Electric Vehicle is powered entirely by electricity from the utility grid. Battery Electric Vehicles currently have a range of 80 to 120 miles or more.

  • Fuel/Cost Savings: Because EVs use electricity for all or part of their power, they are cheaper to run. With a pure battery EV, you can save up to 75 percent per year on fuel versus a gas-powered car.
  • Performance & Maintenance: Battery electric vehicles also benefit from not having a transmission or combustion engine, eliminating oil changes, fuel filters, emissions testing and other costly maintenance.
  • Better for the Environment: About one-third of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation — and 60 percent of that is from personal vehicle use. EVs significantly reduce carbon emissions.
  • Tax Rebate: The IRS allows a tax credit (of between $2,500 and $7,500) for qualified battery-electric vehicles, depending on the vehicle type.
