Utility encourages smart energy use as temperatures and electricity needs rise
Orlando, Fla. – Amid an extended stretch of extreme heat, OUC—The Reliable One customers are setting new summer electric demand records across Central Florida, underscoring the critical importance of reliable service and demand management during peak summer conditions.
On Sunday (8/16), OUC’s St. Cloud customers set a new peak demand record of 303 megawatts (MW), surpassing the previous mark of 298 MW set just a month earlier on July 8.
For days, temperatures across Central Florida have surged into the high 90s, with heat indexes above 110°F, putting added strain on air conditioning systems and driving up OUC’s power demand. In response, OUC is increasing outreach, conservation guidance, and assistance to its customers.
To help cool your home more efficiently, OUC recommends these easy-to-use tips:
- Set your A/C to “auto” so the fan only runs when needed.
- Replace dirty filters to maintain airflow and reduce strain on your system.
- Aim for 78°F or higher — each degree lower can increase cooling costs by 6–8%. Install a smart thermostat to manage temperatures while you’re away.
- Use ceiling fans to feel cooler. Remember to turn them off when you leave the room.
- Block heat with shades, drapes, blinds, or window film, especially on east- and west-facing windows. Keep windows and doors closed to hold in cool air.
Additional energy efficiency tips:
- Run full loads in dishwashers and washing machines; skip using hot water when possible.
- Set your water heater between 120°F and 125°F to reduce wasted energy.
- Air dry clothes when you can and avoid overloading the dryer since it reduces efficiency.
