Solar Panel Retrofit Can Provide Nearly 60 Showers
to Orlando’s Homeless Population in One Charge

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC—The Reliable One) and SALT Outreach Inc., have partnered to provide energy efficient showers to homeless citizens around Orlando via a mobile, solar-powered shower trailer. The trailer boasts four bathrooms – each containing a shower, toilet and sink.

OUC engineers worked with SALT to retrofit the trailer – which, until now, required connection to a power source – with four solar panels able to provide approximately 60 showers during one charge.

“As the hometown utility, we’re always seeking ways to combine our commitment to energy efficiency with our community outreach,” said Jenise Osani, OUC Vice President of Marketing & New Products. “This partnership with SALT allows us to spread the message of clean energy while helping our neighbors work to end their cycle of homelessness.”

According to SALT Outreach, many of our area’s homeless citizens have to wait as long as three months between showers. A shower, along with clean clothes, identification, haircuts, eye glasses, and more, are crucial to seek and maintain employment and eventually find permanent housing.

“With the solar panels provided by OUC, we are able to operate in even more places, and are more equipped to meet the Homebound where they are,” said Eric Camarillo, SALT Outreach President & CEO. “It dramatically increases our service area and ultimately helps us to provide more showers, to even more people, in even more places. Not only is this environmentally friendly, but it will help us cut down costs we may pay for power that we can reinvest in helping empower our Homebound friends on the road to obtaining employment, housing and self-sufficiency.”

About SALT Outreach
SALT Outreach is a faith-based, grass roots, young adult-led Non-Profit Organization. Currently, SALT is an all-volunteer organization. SALT is an acronym for Service And Love Together and seeks to share the character of Christ through service. SALT’s major outreach project is with the homeless of downtown Orlando. SALT Outreach has a mobile outreach center that primarily targets the homeless who may not be able to qualify for housing. The goal is to empower the homeless to obtain and maintain employment to lead to obtaining housing. Our mobile outreach center provides showers through our mobile outreach trailer, clothing through our mobile clothing trailer, haircuts, and food. Through our partners, we are able to provide help with identification, help with vision, hepatitis A vaccines, and more. We are on track to implement case management to increase our impact among the homeless population.
