OUC Dedicates Unique Community Solar Farm

Announces Plans for Future Renewable Projects

Ken Ksionek Solar Farm East Orange County – OUC – The Reliable One is set to make a major announcement regarding new solar energy at the dedication of its latest solar farm – the largest in Orange County – at 9 a.m., Thursday, December 7, at the Stanton Energy Center. OUC leaders, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will be on hand. OUC will announce details on several large-scale solar projects that will multiply the utility’s solar capacity.

In addition, the array will be officially named the Kenneth P. Ksionek Community Solar Farm. Ksionek, who is retiring as OUC’s General Manager & CEO next year, began his career building Stanton’s iconic coal units and has been a major proponent in adding solar to OUC’s fuel generation portfolio. He has worked at OUC for 32 years and spent the last 14 as the Chief Executive Officer.

As one of the most unique solar facilities in the United States, 37,544 solar panels are located atop a byproduct landfill on land once designated for a future coal plant. Spread across 24 acres, the panels are capable of generating 13 megawatts of energy – enough to power 2,100 homes. OUC will receive the energy in the form of a Power Purchase Agreement, meaning a third party owns and operates the site, for at least the next 20 years.

Six years ago, OUC unveiled the area’s first solar farm – a nearly 6 megawatt field – also at SEC. In 2017, OUC will have doubled its solar energy production and continues to wisely invest in other renewable energy such as landfill methane gas.
