Data Indicates OUC is 50 % More Reliable and 34 % Faster Despite Busy Summer

ORLANDO –Newly released data for OUC’s last Fiscal Year (ending September 30) clearly show our customers enjoy far fewer electric outages and shorter delays when compared to the state’s larger investor-owned utilities (IOU’s). OUC’s rolling 12-month data shows OUC finishing well ahead in all key performance areas that measure overall electric reliability. The top showing comes even after the summer’s intense heat pushed OUC to set two all-time record peak demands for power and evening storms brought tens of thousands of lightning strikes into our area.

Each year, the state’s IOU’s report their reliability data to the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC). For the last 17 years OUC’s has come out on top. But this year, the Commission’s excellent system design, construction and maintenance have really paid off. The two most-often used data points in the industry are L-Bar and SAIDI. OUC’s latest data compared to the latest IOU data submitted to the PSC.

L-Bar: Divides the minutes of interruption by the total number of outages. OUC’s outages were not only shorter, but they occurred less often than everyone else.  OUC restored power 34 percent faster than the second place utility and 56 percent faster than the last place finisher.

System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) Measures the average amount of time a customer is without power during the course of a year.  By this measure, OUC is 50 percent more reliable than the next closest utility and 63 percent more reliable than the last place utility.

"Each year OUC sets out to maintain our name - The Reliable One,” General Manager and CEO Ken Ksionek said. "Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our employees, OUC customers can rest assured that they will continue to get the most reliable and safe electric service in Florida while we continue to be mindful of sustainability and affordability to the community we serve." OUC maintains nearly 2,400 miles of electric transmission and distribution lines over its 419-square-mile service area.

About OUC – The Reliable One

Established in 1923 by a special act of the Florida Legislature, OUC—The Reliable One is the second largest municipal utility in Florida and 14th largest municipal in the country. OUC provides electric, water, chilled water and/or lighting services to more than 234,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties. According to data provided by the Florida Public Service Commission, OUC has been more reliable than the state’s investor-owned utilities for 17 years running. OUC is focused not just on reliability and affordability, but weaves sustainability into everything it does. This includes opening the area’s first community solar farm, installing nearly 150 electric vehicle charging stations, implementing a comprehensive corporate recycling program and encouraging its customers to use energy and water as wisely as possible.
