OUC Crews Back Home After Helping with Sandy Restoration

All OUC crews deployed to help Maryland and New York have now returned home safely. The last trucks arrived in Orlando on Saturday night. OUC sent a total of 41 employees to assist in power restoration in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The dedicated linemen worked long 16 hour days in bitter cold conditions to get the lights back on.

OUC Re-Routes More Crews to New York

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, OUC continues to help our neighbors to the north.

Late last week, 16 OUC employees were diverted from Maryland to New York to join the OUC crews already working on Long Island. The 11 remaining employees who had been restoring power in Garrett County, Maryland returned home to Orlando. These line technicians have been working in freezing temperatures and several feet of snow in this mountainous area near the West Virginia border.

"I want to express my sincere gratitude to Orlando and to the city's gifted and compassionate Orlando Utilities Commission linemen.

Superstorm Sandy dumped 30 inches of heavy, wet snow on Garrett County, Maryland. Our abundant oak and pine forests couldn't withstand the weight, and thousands of trees and limbs came crashing down on our power lines. Garrett County was in serious trouble in a few hours. Our roads were blocked by the fallen debris, and our power lines were in shambles.

We asked for help, and OUC sent the best of the best. OUC's linemen worked in below-freezing conditions that would test even the most seasoned local resident. The four crews that worked my rural neighborhood for two days couldn't have been more professional and courteous. Thanks from all of us in Garrett County." - Craig & Becky Hunter Swanton, Md.

Grateful Long Island Resident Writes Thank You

"I'm not sure if I am writing this note to the right place or not but I have to try. I just went to a local 7-11 here
in Bay Shore, NY on Long Island. I saw one of your bucket trucks in the parking lot and waited for one of your employees to come out. I wanted to thank him for being here and helping us New Yorkers out. I asked him his name and he told me it was Shaun Frazier [pictured, middle with Jason Drayton and Jon Brault]. Well, I just want to let you know that you have sent us an angel. I heard him tell a woman that what he had done was an easy fix and took only a few minutes to do. She in return had told him that she had been out of electric for six days.

I don’t know if this gentlemen works for your township or not but if he does you should be very proud to have him on your force. Not only was he pleasant to talk to he sounded like he was truly glad to be here and helping us all out." - Joanne Lawrence

OUC Crews Already at Work in Maryland for Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

A second group of OUC electric crews left OUC’s Pershing facility in Orlando on Friday afternoon for Long Island to help with the restoration efforts after Hurricane Sandy smashed into the Northeast earlier this week. The utility vehicles are bringing 14 OUC personnel, including OUC trouble technician and Long Island native Jon Brault [pictured], to assist with storm relief at Long Island Power Authority.

On Tuesday, OUC sent electric crews to Maryland to assist FirstEnergy. The crews arrived in snowy McHenry, Maryland on Thursday evening and were helping get Garrett County residents back in power Friday.

OUC Crews Arrive in Maryland to Help with Hurricane Sandy Restoration Efforts

The 27 OUC employees and 22-truck convoy that left Orlando on Tuesday arrived in snowy McHenry, Maryland on Thursday evening to assist FirstEnergy restore power to its customers. This morning those crews are helping assess the damage in western Maryland and begin the restoration process after Hurricane Sandy hit the area earlier this week.

As of Friday morning, service had been restored to 1.2 million of FirstEnergy’s 2.3 million utility customers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland.

27 Employees En Route to Mid-Atlantic in Wake of Sandy

ORLANDO – Twenty two OUC trucks carrying 27 employees departed for New Jersey this afternoon in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The OUC crews are en route to assist FirstEnergy restore power in New Jersey. After Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast yesterday, more than 1.6 million FirstEnergy customers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and West Virginia were without power.

"We're not sure what to expect, but after all of the storms we've been through here in Orlando, we're ready for just about anything. Our goal is to help as many customers as possible get the lights back on," said Lead Line Technician Chris Wohlfart.
