OUC URGES CUSTOMERS TO CONSERVE ENERGY

Statewide Generating Capacity Alert Issued Due to Hurricane Katrina

ORLANDO - Although maintaining enough generating capacity to meet customer needs, OUC-The Reliable One is encouraging energy conservation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina's impact on fuel production.

The Florida Reliability Coordinating Council has issued a "Generating Capacity Alert" due to the continued uncertainty of restoration of natural gas and oil production facilities in the Gulf of Mexico. By conserving energy, OUC customers can help our community manage this fuel shortage.

"OUC has the generating capacity to meet the needs of our customers," said Ken Ksionek, OUC General Manager and CEO. "However, we recognize the energy needs around the state and are encouraging our customers to voluntarily conserve electricity while Hurricane Katrina's impact is fully evaluated."

To help conserve electricity, especially in the late afternoon and early evening, OUC recommends:

  • Setting your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher, although some customers may need to keep the temperature a little cooler.

  • Keeping your central A/C unit on auto. If you will be away from home for more than four hours, turn off the unit completely or set it to 85 degrees.

  • Using shades, drapes and blinds to keep the sun and heat out.

  • Using ceiling fans to feel cooler, but turning them off when you leave the room.

  • Setting pool pumps not to operate during late afternoon and evening hours.

  • Washing and rinsing your clothes in cold water.
