OUC Water Named Best-Tasting In Florida

ORLANDO  – Talk about making a big splash.

OUC’s drinking water was named the best in the state by the Florida section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA). A panel of judges tested water from 10 utilities across the state, checking for taste, color, clarity and smell. Each of the utilities had advanced to the state competition after winning taste tests at the district level.

AWWA presented the award to OUC during a ceremony in Tallahassee on April 13, 2004.

“This award really validates the sweeping improvements we’ve made to our water system in recent years,” General Manager & CEO Ken Ksionek said. “We set out to produce the state’s highest-quality, best-tasting water – and that’s exactly what we did. We’re very proud.”

OUC’s water has been recognized by AWWA as the best in Central Florida for two consecutive years.

Through an initiative called Water Project 2000, OUC replaced its older water-treatment plants with new, state-of-the-art facilities. As part of the process, the utility began using an ozone-treatment process that produces high-quality, great-tasting tap water proudly dubbed H2OUC. As a strong oxidant, ozone removes smelly hydrogen sulfide and leaves the water with a fresh taste and sparkling appearance. Ozone also reduces the amount of chlorine that must be added to the water, improving the taste even more.

Established in 1923 and owned by the citizens of Orlando, OUC-The Reliable One provides electric and water services to more than 190,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties. OUC is the second-largest municipal utility in Florida.
