OUC's Meter-Reading Record Near Perfect

Orlando (February 4, 2003) – When it comes to reading meters, OUC—The Reliable One is certainly living up to its name.

OUC's meter readers ended 2002 with an accuracy rate of 99.949 percent, or only one error for every 2,000 meters read.

OUC's governing board recently honored the utility's Meter Readers of the Year for 2002, Jason Kirkland and Jose Rodriguez. Kirkland read 130,000 meters in Orlando with only one error, and Rodriguez read 89,000 meters in St. Cloud with only one error. Errors are discovered through unusually high or low readings and/or computer analysis and promptly corrected by OUC.

As a group, OUC's meter-reading team read nearly 4 million meters last year, walking over 70,000 miles in all types of weather conditions. "As a point of reference, this means our Meter Reading Department walked a distance equivalent to 32 round trips from Orlando to New York," said Kevin Noonan, OUC's director of meter services. "That's more than 2,670 marathons."

Established in 1923 and owned by the citizens of Orlando, OUC—The Reliable One provides electric and water services to more than 190,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties.
