AWWA Honors OUC For Leak Detection Program

ORLANDO (November 13, 2002) – The Florida Section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) has recognized OUC—The Reliable One for its work helping customers rapidly identify and correct water leaks.

OUC won 1st place in the water loss/leak detection category of AWWA’s Water Conservation Awards for Excellence contest. AWWA honored OUC’s WaterWaster Rapid Detection Program, which was implemented in February 2002. In its first seven months, the program helped 159 residential and commercial customers save an estimated 170,304,000 gallons of water.

Under the program, meter-reading devices detect unusually high water-consumption levels and prompt meter readers to conduct two additional readings within 24 hours to confirm the data. Meanwhile, OUC’s water conservation coordinator receives data on all abnormally high readings in a daily “high-low consumption report.” The coordinator calls and/or visits all customers on the report (an average of 30 per day) within 24 hours of the initial high meter reading to help arrange for plumbing repairs and/or irrigation changes.

Established in 1881, AWWA is the oldest and largest nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to safe drinking water in North America. AWWA has over 56,000 members worldwide and its 4,500 utility members serve 80 percent of America’s population.

OUC—The Reliable One lives up to its name by providing the best record of electric reliability in the state of Florida and delivering high-quality, great-tasting drinking water to its customers. Established in 1923 and owned by the citizens of Orlando, OUC serves more than 190,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties.
