Tico Perez Elected OUC President

ORLANDO (January 24, 2001) – Prominent attorney Tico Perez has been elected president of the city-owned Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC—The Reliable One). His leadership comes during one of the most progressive periods in OUC’s history.

"I’m proud to step into this position at such an important time," Perez said. "Not only are we moving forward with a long-term program to protect our water resources, we’re planning carefully for the region’s future energy demands."

Perez was first elected to OUC’s governing board in October 1997 to fill the unexpired term of Mel Martinez, who left the post to campaign for Orange County chairman. Currently, Perez is serving a four-year term that began on January 1, 2000.

"Commissioner Perez takes his role at OUC very seriously and always makes well-informed decisions on the issues before him," said Bob Haven, OUC’s general manager and CEO. "He’s a genuine asset to OUC as well as to all of Central Florida."

Perez’s involvement in the community extends far beyond his duties at OUC and as a partner with Orlando law firm Baker & Hostetler. The native Floridian boasts a long list of professional accomplishments and awards. Most recently, Perez received the 2000 Distinguished Leader Award from the Greater Orlando Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Orlando program. He has been active with the Chamber in a variety of ways, serving as chairman in 1996-97 and serving on its board of directors and numerous affiliated committees and regional councils over the past 13 years.

Additionally, Perez has been named a UCF Distinguished Alumnus and received the UCF Alumni Association Citizenship Award. He is currently a member of the UCF Foundation Board of Directors and has been active with the university since serving as student body president in 1982-83.

Perez is president of the Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America, president of the Eva Mae Hurst Charitable Foundation and an active member of several other civic boards, including the executive board of Florida 2012, the committee preparing this region’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

After earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Central Florida, Perez received a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.

Perez succeeds former OUC President Dr. Carol Wilson, a graduate program professor at UCF who continues to serve on the OUC board.

OUC—The Reliable One is a municipal utility owned by the City of Orlando. It provides electricity and water services to more than 165,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange County.
