OUC Wins Service To Mankind Honor

ORLANDO (May 17, 2000)OUC—The Reliable One was honored with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s esteemed Service To Mankind Award for its tireless commitment to improving the quality of life in Central Florida.

"In so many ways OUC sets an outstanding example of dedicated involvement in our community not only as a corporation but also through the commitment of its many employees," said Wendy Henry, president of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Central Florida chapter.

The Service To Mankind Award is bestowed annually upon both a corporate entity and an individual. This year’s individual honoree is J. Gordon Arkin, a prominent attorney with Foley & Lardner. Past recipients include RDV Sports, Walt Disney Memorial Cancer Institute, Universal Studios, Mayor Glenda Hood, Senator Toni Jennings and Manny Garcia.

"It’s always heartening for OUC to be recognized for its community service," said Bob Haven, OUC’s general manager and CEO. "We appreciate this award and will keep doing everything we can to make Orlando a great place to live and work."

OUC lends a helping hand to charities and civic organizations across Central Florida, making the diverse region a better place for all residents. In its quest to make a difference, OUC supports the Heart of Florida United Way, United Arts, March of Dimes, Orlando Humane Society, Salvation Army and Second Harvest Food Bank, among many other organizations.

A proud and energetic bunch, OUC employees routinely volunteer their valuable free time to participate in such fundraisers as the Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

This year marked the 19th anniversary of the Service To Mankind Awards in Central Florida. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society paid tribute to OUC and Mr. Arkin at a May 11 awards ceremony at SeaWorld Orlando.

OUC, owned by the City of Orlando, is the nation’s 19th-largest municipal utility and one of Florida’s top performers in electric reliability. OUC provides electricity and water services to about 158,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange County.
