WaterSense and Water StarWater Sustainability

As Central Florida continues to grow, so does the demand for clean, safe water from the Floridan Aquifer. To prepare for our region's future needs, OUC has taken a leadership role in the search for innovative, reliable solutions while still providing clean, great-tasting water for our customers today.

OUC is committed to the sustainable use of water resources in the state of Florida. We have been closely monitoring the work of the Central Florida Water Initiative, which is a collaborative effort among the three water management districts in our area, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, water supply utilities, and other stakeholders.

CFWI is currently exploring new ways to meet the long-term water demands of the region while minimizing environmental impacts. For more information on CFWI, including scheduled meetings, visit their website.

As Central Florida continues to grow, so does the demand for clean, safe water from the Floridan Aquifer. To prepare for our region's future needs, OUC has taken a leadership role in the search for innovative, reliable solutions while still providing clean, great-tasting water for our customers today.

To identify solutions for the short- and long-term protection of our vital water resources, OUC is working closely with water management districts, other utilities, and federal and state regulatory agencies like the EPA's WaterSense program. OUC is a partner in the WaterSense program, which makes it easy to save water and protect the environment by identifying water-efficient ideas and products.

Not only are we helping our customers save water, we're committed to making sure our own facilities are water efficient. In fact our new downtown customer service and administration center, Reliable Plaza, has earned a Florida Water StarSM certification for its water efficient features and Florida friendly landscaping. Reliable Plaza uses 40 percent less water than a similarly sized facility.

OUC developed an Integrated Water Resources Plan – a comprehensive, overarching approach to study conservation options, pursue alternative water supplies and evaluate partnerships with local governments. To protect Central Florida’s water resources over the long term, the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) issued Consumptive Use Permits (CUPs) to area water authorities, requiring them to meet 46 water conservation and management conditions, while limiting the amount of water drawn from the Floridan Aquifer, our most pristine and reliable source of fresh water. OUC was issued a 20-year CUP, which enables OUC to meet customer needs through 2023.

In 2008, OUC compiled an initial five-year CUP compliance report, detailing efforts to reduce water use, educate customers about conservation and explore new alternative water resources. OUC is vigilantly monitoring 25 sites and withdrawals from the aquifer to ensure that they do not impact wetlands, lakes and spring flows.

OUC—The Reliable One produces some of the purest, best-tasting water in the nation. And because we weave sustainability through all we do, we’ve partnered with the City of Orlando and placed H2OUC hydration stations throughout the city at our parks, community centers and neighborhood centers. The hydration stations will provide residents an easy way to refill reusable water bottles while on the go.
