Efficient Fleet
OUC Hits The Road With Biodiesel Fuel
OUC is reducing emissions in its fleet. The environmentally conscious utility has begun using biodiesel fuel in some of its fleet vehicles. Biodiesel, a clean-burning alternative fuel produced from domestic renewable resources, is made from new or used vegetables oils and animal fats, including recycled cooking grease. Compared to petroleum diesel, biodiesel produces lower emissions, which is better for the environment.
The fuel OUC uses is B20, a blended fuel of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel. A U.S. Department of Energy study showed that the production and use of B20 biodiesel resulted in a 15.66 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional fuel. B20 has been integrated seamlessly into OUC’s fueling system without any changes to vehicles or fuel storage and distribution equipment.
Our biodiesel fueling station has pumped out more than 45,000 gallons since November 2006. At the current rate, OUC expected to use between 140,000 - 150,000 gallons of B20 in 2007.
Soon, we’ll be able to fill up our tanks downtown. Thanks to a $2.5 million grant from the Florida Department of Environment Protection, Central Florida’s LYNX transit system plans to open a biodiesel blending facility and fueling station at its Orlando Operations Center.
