Reliable
Plaza Gets Official “Gold” Seal
Reliable Plaza – the “Greenest Building in downtown Orlando”
–has officially gone “Gold,” recently
earning Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
certification from the U.S. Green
Building Council (USGBC).
The non-profit USGBC awarded OUC’s 10-story administration and
customer service center with
the Gold level certification after completing a review of the
building’s
energy and water efficient design and construction.
Reliable Plaza, which uses 26 percent less energy and 43 percent
less water than a similar structure built to code, earned 41
points on the LEED rating scale to reach the Gold medal mark and
was named the 2009 LEED New Construction Project of the Year
bythe USGBC’s Central Florida Chapter.
“Hats off to OUC for their
example of how energy efficient and beautiful a
green building can be,” said Michelle DeLora, Chairwoman of the
USGBC
Central Florida Board of Directors. OUC Commission President
Katie Porta said the award underscores the utility’s commitment
to the environment and the community.
“Our new building created an opportunity to set the standard for
future energy and water efficient buildings in Central Florida,”
Porta said. “This certification indicates that we have met that
goal.” |

OUC InstallsState’s 1st
Pole-Mounted Solar Panels
OUC
recently installed 10 solar panels on utility poles along Curry Ford
Road as part of a pilot project
that can generate up to 2 kilowatts – about enough power for
a small home. The electricity produced by
the panels will flow directly back into the power grid.
This innovative solar panel demonstration project between
OUC and clean energy company Petra Solar is the first utility
pole-mounted solar photovoltaic system in Florida and features
technology developed right in our own backyard. Petra Solar worked
in collaboration with the University of Central Florida to develop
the pole-mounted approach to clean energy generation that is
expected to enhance the Smart Grid capabilities and
reliability of the electric distribution grid. |
Project CARE Needs You
In
today’s tough economic times, OUC’s Project CARE program is more
important than ever. Project CARE helps individuals and families in
the Central Florida area who are experiencing temporary problems
paying their utility bill.
All funds for the program are
collected by OUC, which matches the donations $2 to $1 and turns
them over to United Way 2-1-1, a local, non-profit community
assistance agency. The program’s intent is not to pay chronic or
long-term debt but to assist those experiencing temporary financial
hardship.
To learn more about this program or how you can
donate to Project CARE, please visit
www.ouc.com
or call 407.423.9018.
Customers in Orlando and Orange County needing assistance from
Project CARE should call 2-1-1. |

Share-A-Night This
Holiday Season
The Ronald McDonald House® is a “home-away-from-home” for
families with children receiving treatment at local hospitals and
medical facilities. Each year, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of
Central Florida encourages members of the community to Share-A-Night
by sponsoring family stays.
Although operating costs are approximately $60 per night,
per room, families staying at our Houses are asked to donate only
$15 per night, and no one is ever turned away
for inability to pay. In 2009, only 37% of families staying at our
Houses have been financially able to contribute.
The need for our services continues to grow. Please, help
a family with a child in medical crisis
by donating to our
Share-A-Night campaign this holiday season.
